Canada Road/Bicycle Sunday
An easy ride for anyone...no big hills, good shoulder, moderate traffic.
If you ride this from one end of Canada
Road to the other, it runs 7.3 miles (14.6 roundtrip). No big
hills, pretty good road surfaces, just two stop signs! And if
you just ride the section from Edgewood to 92 you're looking at an 8 mile
roundtrip. This ride proves that not everything on this
website has to include a monstrous mountain climb!
Bicycle Sunday, by the way, is the closing of Canada Road to cars
between the Canada/92 and Filoli Estate, about half a mile north of
the Canada/Edgewood intersections. According to the posted signs,
it's closed most Sundays from 9am-3pm. It is
not closed for major Sunday holidays (Easter), nor is it closed
during foul weather. Actually, the sign also says it's not
closed in Winter, but the months given on the sign indicate
year-round closure. Something I'll look into.
Starting out at Canada Road & 92 (Ralston), just
west of San Mateo. You could ride here, but there's lots of parking
if you need to drive.
That's Crystal Springs Reservoir on the right, where
most of the Peninsula's drinking water is stored.
Canada Road is enjoyed by all, from the family shown
here (youngest looked about 6) to the most serious of racers.
If
you have young kids...
After you've climbed a very mild hill, you're
rewarded with this always-stunning view. And, of course, you
get to coast for awhile!
That's the Pulgas Water Temple, the western portal
of the Hetch Hetchy aqueduct. Pretty impressive to look down
into.
On the right is the Filoli Estate, made famous by the
TV show Dynasty, which used the Filoli house for their exterior
shots.
This is looking back at the intersection of Edgewood
Road & Canada, the southern boundary for the Bicycle Sunday road
closure.
Watch for the stop sign at Jefferson! The
sheriff definitely tickets cyclists who run the sign...and on some
days, they get a lot of business.
Canada Road winds underneath the 280 freeway here, with Canada
College just off to the left.
Just past the 280 overpass you get a
straight shot on a gradual descent into Woodside.
And at the end, or the beginning, depending upon the direction
you've ridden, is Robert's of Woodside...probably the most popular
departure point for bicycle rides on the peninsula! Not a bad
place for a bite to eat, either.

challenge? Try the Delta Century near Stockton.
The 50k (32 mile) route is the logical next step after tackling
Canada Road. No hills, quiet roads, and a great club (Stockton
Bicycle Club) putting it on. Typically held the last weekend or
April or first weekend in May. A great "first event" for those not
into climbing our local hills.
