Does your helmet look like this one? Salt stains on all the
straps from a year or so of riding?
Not
grossed-out enough yet? How about a close-up of a strap so
encrusted with salt (sounds so much better than "dried
sweat") that those creaking noises you thought were coming
from your cranks...
So what are you going to do about it? Start with a bowl
full of clean, hot water. You know, the type of water where
you can see the bottom of the bowl through it (not available in
all municipalities).
Remove your pads and soak them in the water. If you're
brave, check if you can still see the bottom of the bowl.
You can't? Wonder what that means!
After soaking, squish them around by hand, and then rinse them
out in clean water. Now set them aside to dry.
For the straps, just stick the entire helmet on top of the bowl
and let them soak in it. You may need to do this a couple of
times...don't stop until you can see through the bowl. This
may take awhile...
And at the end, voila, a clean and considerably less smelly
helmet! Didn't know your helmet smelled bad before?
Guess you've got some very loyal friends!
