For our
2003 TurkeyDay ride, we chose an old reliable... the
Old LaHonda/Pescadero/Stage
Road/Tunitas Creek loop (follow that link to a page with a map
of the ride). Just under 60 miles or rural roads, great climbs
and beautiful scenery. We started out with about 10 riders,
and got up to 12 at the base of Old LaHonda.
I'm
really bad with names, but some of the folk on the ride were
Richard B, Kevin, two Eds, Ueyn, Brad, Shawn, Andrea and Bruno.
I'm sure I'm leaving a few out...
Heading
out Portola Road towards Old LaHonda... just bikes out at 8am, no
cars!
That's Brad, one of
those 16-year-old superlight models that eats up hills for
breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Can't tell for sure, but think that's Andrea in these two photos
from Old LaHonda. Andrea and her friend Ed heard about the
ride via email from Kevin, who told her it was a "moderate to
fast-paced" outing. I don't think she was disappointed.
A quick stop at
Memorial Park for a headset adjustment.
Closing in (quickly) on
Pescadero; temps had been moderate, but it was about 37 here!
Heading
towards "downtown" Pescadero.
These shadows on Stage
Road help you feel 10 feet tall! At the end of this section are the
infamous machine-gun-man sculptures.
That's Brad passing by
the machine-gun statute on Stage Road. That alone is worth the
trip!
The obligatory stop at
the always-open San Gregorio General Store. On a major
holiday, this will likely be the only open store.
Fianlly, a picture that
makes a climb (Stage Road) look as steep as it actually is!
Is it a good idea to be
taking photos while flying down Highway 1 at 45+mph? (No.)
Unidentified rider on a typical (typically beautiful) section of
Tunitas Creek. It's amazing that an area with as many people
as the SF Bay Area has such lightly-traveled treasures so close to
home.
Richard B
getting a push up Tunitas from Ueyn.
Rider whose name I
don't recall (one of the Eds?) cresting Tunitas Creek, with tongue
hanging out.
Overall a
very nice ride, but with a bit of a scare when, as we pulled into
Pescadero, a head count revealed that we were missing Brad.
Nobody knew when he dropped off and, worse, it was likely he didn't
know the route we'd be taking. We split the group up, with the
majority heading out Stage Road (as planned) and Richard, Ueyn &
myself backtracking to run Brad down. We found him a couple
miles up the road; he'd had a flat. In the future, I'll make
sure that everyone knows the route for each segment ahead!
